The University Grant Commission or UGC, as it is commonly known, is the statutory authority in India that is entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining standards of higher education in the country. Therefore it also enjoys the power of giving grants to universities and colleges and also the power to recognize and de recognize institutes of higher education.
